The Jenkins Bus

A brand film documenting the preservation of a piece of American civil rights history. Esau and Janie B. Jenkins used their 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 bus to further their tireless advocacy for African-American citizens on Johns Island, South Carolina, from the 1940s through the 1970s, with the bus's tailgate bearing their famous motto: "Love Is Progress; Hate Is Expensive." After sitting in a backyard for decades, Volkswagen partnered with the Historic Vehicle Association to preserve the bus and honor the Jenkins legacy. The film captured both their story and the restoration process, living on Volkswagen's social channels and on vw.com as part of a series highlighting the people who helped shape the brand's place in American culture.
